Border 2 Cast Reunites in Pune for Third Schedule; Varun Dhawan’s Casting Sparks Debate
The anticipation around Border 2 just got a major boost as the entire lead cast came together for the first time in an official group photo. Shared on Tuesday, the image features Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, and Varun Dhawan seated with the film’s creative team standing behind them. The picture marks the beginning of the film’s third shooting schedule at the National Defence Academy in Pune.
Sunny Deol took to Instagram to post the image with the caption: “When all ‘Forces’ Come together! #BORDER2… Diljit Dosanjh & Ahan Shetty join Sunny Deol and Varun Dhawan as the battalion kicks off the 3rd schedule at Pune’s National Defence Academy.”
While excitement surged among fans—especially with Diljit Dosanjh joining the project—Varun Dhawan’s presence in the image stirred some skepticism online. Social media users felt his look and vibe clashed with the intense war backdrop the film promises. A few even suggested that actors like Vicky Kaushal or Sidharth Malhotra might have been better suited for the role.
Still, many are optimistic. One fan wrote, “Eagerly waiting,” while another said, “Diljit stuns. This will be great.” Ahan Shetty also received warm support, with sister Athiya Shetty resharing the photo on her Instagram stories with the message, “Can’t wait for this one.”
Directed by Anurag Singh, known for Kesari, and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta, Border 2 is set to hit theatres on January 23, 2026. The film serves as a sequel to J.P. Dutta’s iconic 1997 blockbuster Border, which starred Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, and Akshaye Khanna, and depicted the India-Pakistan War of 1971.
Interestingly, Ahan Shetty will now carry on his father Suniel Shetty’s legacy, who portrayed the legendary BSF officer Bhairon Singh in the original film.
As the Border 2 team embarks on its next leg of filming, all eyes are on how this mix of seasoned stars and new-age talent comes together on screen.
