Neon Picks Up Bong Joon Ho’s Animated Debut ‘Ally’

Neon has acquired North American rights to Bong Joon Ho’s first animated feature Ally, marking his return to the distributor after Parasite’s Oscar-winning run. The film, in development since 2019, is set for completion in early 2027 and will receive a wide theatrical release later that year.

Bong co-wrote the screenplay with rising filmmaker Jason Yu, director of the acclaimed 2023 horror Sleep. Ally tells the story of a piglet squid in the South Pacific who dreams of seeing the sun, only to be thrust into danger when a mysterious aircraft crashes into the ocean. The adventure explores friendship and courage as Ally journeys alongside real marine creatures.

CJ ENIM, Penture Invest, and Pathe are financing and distributing, with Seo Woo-sik producing after previous collaborations on Mother and Okja. Pathe will handle distribution in Europe and West Africa, while CJ and Penture oversee Asia.

With Ally, Bong expands his storytelling into 3D animation, promising a heartfelt family adventure that blends imagination with environmental themes.
