When a casual chat turns into cinematic history.
Long before the cameras rolled on Metro… In Dino, its first spark ignited in a living‑room conversation between director Anurag Basu and the late, great Irrfan Khan. Fresh off Jagga Jasoos, the two friends were catching up when Irrfan suddenly pitched, “Metro 2 banaate hai” (let’s make Metro 2).
At the time, Basu had no intention of revisiting the mosaic‑style storytelling that made 2007’s Life in a… Metro a cult favourite. He even doubted whether the original would work when he first made it. Yet that spontaneous suggestion lingered, eventually blossoming into the “spiritual sequel” we now know as Metro… In Dino.
“I didn’t plan a trilogy at all. I was just nervous about whether Life in a… Metro would connect. But after that I embraced writing hyper‑linked narratives—Ludo came next, and now this,” Basu told News18.
From idea to ensemble
While early rumours in 2017 hinted that Irrfan might return, the project went through several delays and rewrites. Today’s version brings together a powerhouse cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal, Anupam Kher, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Neena Gupta.
The film weaves four interconnected love stories—spanning young, middle‑aged, and older couples—set against the relentless rhythm of a modern metro city. Early footage teases intriguing pairings: Sara–Aditya, Konkona–Pankaj, Ali–Fatima, and Anupam–Neena.
