Director Jeff Fowler announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 had finished filming and teased fans with a photo of himself holding Metal Sonic, the robotic villain first hinted at in Sonic 3. They promised this will be “the best Sonic movie yet”, set to release on March 19, 2027, while confirming another untitled sequel for late 2028.
Ben Schwartz returns as Sonic, joined by Kristen Bell as Amy Rose, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow. Jim Carrey, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter reprise their live-action roles, with producers Neal H. Mortiz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara steering the franchise forward.
Sonic 3 proved the series box office strength, earning over $490 million worldwide in 2024 and featuring Carrey in a dual Robotnik role. Beyond theatres, the Sonic universe expanded with the Paramount+ Knuckles series, solidifying its pop culture presence.
Critics praised Sonic 3 for its fast-paced mix of action and comedy, set against striking backdrops like Tokyo and London. With Metal Sonic stepping into the spotlight, Sonic 4 looks ready to accelerate the franchise’s momentum even further.
