Gangubai Kathiawadi case – Bombay court dismisses restraining order against Alia Bhatt starrer

The Gangubai Kathiawadi team has heaved a sigh of relief after the Bombay Court’s verdict in the case surrounding the movie. Here’s what happened.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming movie Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt in the lead, has been the talk of the town ever since it was announced. While the first look poster of the movie grabbed millions of eyeballs, Gangubai Kathiawadi also landed in legal trouble as well after Babuji Shah, who claims to be Gangubai Kathiawadi’s adopted son, had filed a lawsuit seeking a permanent injunction restraining order against Gangubai Kathiawadi makers and Mafia Queens of Mumbai author Hussain Zaidi.

And now as per a recent update, a Bombay civil court has dismissed the restraining order against Alia, Bhansali and Hussain Zaidi. For the uninitiated, Bhansali had filed a notice of motion on behalf of his production house and Alia Bhatt as he sought rejection of the lawsuit. Bhansali filed the notice on the grounds that Suit is barred by limitation since the novel was published in the year 2011 and the suit was filed only in December 2020. During the hearing, Bhansali’s legal team claimed that Babuji Shah has failed to produce any proof to prove his connection with Gangubai following which he doesn’t have any locus standi to file the lawsuit against Gangubai Kathiawadi suit.

For the uninitiated, Gangubai Kathiawadi, which is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book, will reportedly feature Alia playing the role of a brothel owner and a matriarch in Gangubai Kathiawadi. The biographical crime drama has been co-produced by Jayantilal Gada and Bhansali himself. It was earlier scheduled to be released in September 2020 but that could not happen because of the unprecedented situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
