For many actors, taking a break from the limelight to embrace motherhood can be fulfilling—but returning to the screen afterward comes with its own set of challenges. In a candid conversation, Bollywood star Kajol opened up about her emotional journey back to acting after the birth of her daughter, Nysa.
Kajol’s return to cinema was marked by her powerful performance in the 2006 romantic thriller Fanaa, where she starred opposite Aamir Khan. But stepping in front of the camera after a 3.5-year hiatus wasn’t as effortless as it might have appeared.
“When I returned with Fanaa, it had been over three years since I last faced the camera,” Kajol revealed in a recent interview with Zoom. “I kept asking myself—‘Do I still have it? Will I be able to perform the same way again?’”
She admitted to having self-doubts and nervousness initially. The transition back into acting was not instant, but rather a process of rediscovery.
However, those fears didn’t last long. Once the first day of shooting wrapped up, Kajol realized that acting was an inseparable part of who she was.
“By the end of the day, I felt like I never left. Acting is muscle memory—something I’ve lived and breathed for years. It’s deeply rooted in me,” she shared.
Fanaa turned out to be a major success, earning over ₹102 crore worldwide on a budget of ₹30 crore. Kajol’s performance was widely praised and won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress that year, reaffirming her place as one of Bollywood’s most cherished talents.
What Kajol is Up to Now
Today, Kajol is gearing up for the release of Maa, a mythological horror thriller directed by Vishal Furia. The film follows a mother entangled in a supernatural battle to save her daughter from a dark curse haunting a remote village.
Produced by Ajay Devgn, Jyoti Deshpande, and Kumar Mangat Pathak, and presented by Jio Studios in collaboration with Devgn Films, Maa features a powerful ensemble cast including Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Roopkatha Chakraborty. The film is set to release on June 27.
As Kajol embraces bold roles post-motherhood, her journey stands as a testament to resilience, reinvention, and the enduring passion for one’s craft.
