World chess champion Magnus Carlsen has tied the knot with his girlfriend, 26-year-old Ella Victoria Malone, according to Norwegian media reports. The wedding’s exact location remains undisclosed, with Verdens Gang (VG), one of Norway’s leading media outlets, confirming the news through Carlsen’s close friends.
The couple first appeared together publicly during the Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge in February. Since then, Ella has been a familiar face at Carlsen’s tournaments, including Norway Chess in Stavanger and the recently concluded FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championship in New York.
Despite her presence at numerous events, Ella has maintained a private life, stating during an interview with Norway’s TV2 that she feels overwhelmed by the media attention at such tournaments. “I’m a private person socially, though I can adapt to social situations. But with all the cameras here, it’s overwhelming,” she shared.
Ella revealed that supporting Carlsen during tournaments can sometimes be challenging. “It’s tough seeing him struggle in a game, but I trust he’ll win most of the time,” she said. She has avoided extensive media interviews, explaining, “Media can blow things out of proportion, so I prefer to stay away.”
Carlsen recently made headlines during the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championship by sharing the World Blitz title with Ian Nepomniachtchi. The finals saw the pair win two games each, followed by three tiebreaker games ending in draws. Carlsen then suggested splitting the trophy, which Nepomniachtchi accepted.
