Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have officially concluded their protracted divorce proceedings after more than eight years of legal disputes.
According to People magazine, Jolie’s legal team confirmed on December 30, 2024, that both parties have reached an agreement, bringing closure to a high-profile case that began in September 2016.
Jolie and Pitt, who were married for two years and together for 12, ended their relationship following an incident on a private plane that allegedly involved an altercation between Pitt and their six children. While authorities investigated the claims, Pitt was not charged, and Jolie later chose not to pursue legal action.
In a statement, Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, remarked, “More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time, she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family. Angelina is relieved that this part of the process is over but remains exhausted by the long journey.”
Custody and Privacy Challenges
The couple’s six children—Maddox (23), Pax (21), Zahara (19), Shiloh (18), and twins Vivienne and Knox (16)—were central to many of the legal battles. Harsh allegations and contested custody arrangements marked much of the case.
In 2017, the former couple agreed to seal court records concerning their children to protect their privacy, but public interest in the case remained high. In 2019, they were declared legally single, even as other disputes lingered.
A source close to Jolie noted her commitment to moving forward, stating, “She doesn’t speak ill of Pitt publicly or privately. She has worked hard to find light after enduring a dark time.”
Disputes Over Shared Assets
While the divorce has been settled, conflicts over shared assets persist. The French estate and winery, Château Miraval, which was once a cornerstone of their relationship, remains a contentious issue.
In 2022, Pitt sued Jolie after she sold her stake in the estate to a third party. Jolie countersued, alleging that Pitt had tried to seize control of the property. In November 2024, a court ruling required Pitt to disclose documents that could potentially support Jolie’s claims of past abuse.
Pitt’s legal team has dismissed these allegations as a “sensationalist fishing expedition.” Despite the ongoing dispute over Château Miraval, the divorce settlement marks a significant milestone in resolving their complex legal history.
Moving Forward
As both Jolie and Pitt navigate the next chapters of their lives, this resolution represents the end of a highly publicized and tumultuous phase. While their ongoing legal battles over assets continue, the conclusion of their divorce brings a sense of finality to one of Hollywood’s most talked-about splits.
