Malayalam cinema witnessed a historic moment on March 4 as legendary actors Mammootty and Mohanlal reunited for the trailer launch of Patriot. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the high-staked spy thriller has already captured the imagination of fans, not only for its gripping premise but also for bringing Mollywood’s Big M’s back together on screen after 18 years.
The event drew massive crowds and turned into a grand celebration of cinema. Fans cheered as the two icons shared the stage, while the trailer itself was simultaneously released on their social media platforms, amplifying the excitement across Kerala and beyond. Their last collaboration was Twenty:20 (2008), a multi-starrer fundraiser for the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists, which became a phenomenal success.
Patriot features a strong ensemble cast including Nayantharam Junchacko boban, Darshana Rajendran, Revathy, and Grace Antony. Speculation is rife that Fahad Faasil may appear as the antagonist, adding further intrigue. Produced by KG Anil Kumar, the film has already garnered international recognition, having been selected as the opening film at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles.
Initially slated for release on April 23, Patriot has now been postponed to May 1, 2026.
The reunion of Mommootty and Mohanlal extends beyond professional collaboration. Their last public appearance together was at an event honoring actor Sreenivasan, making this moment even more poignant. For fans, seeing the two legends together again is a reminder of their enduring friendship and shared legacy in Malayalam cinema.
Both actors continue to chart exciting paths individually. Mohanlal is set to appear in Drishyam 3, directed by Jeethu Joseph, releasing on May 21, 2026. Meanwhile, mammootty has completed Padayaatra, directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, marking their first collaboration in 32 years.
