The world of Indian music is mourning the loss of a legend. Asha Bhosle, the iconic singer whose voice defined generations of Bollywood cinema, passed away at the age of 92 after being admitted in Mumbai’s Breach Candy hospital with cardiac and respiratory complications. Her son, Anand, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Sunday, with last rites scheduled for tomorrow.
Born in 1993 into the illustrious Mangeshkar family, Asha’s journey began at just nine years old when she recorded her first song. By the 1950s, she had carved her own identity in the industry, often typecast in cabaret and dance numbers before proving her versatility with soulful ghazals like Dil Cheez Kya Hai from Umrao Jaan. Over her career, she won seven Filmfare Awards and two national Film Awards, cementing her place as one of the most celebrated playback singers in Indian cinema.
Her personal life was as dramatic as her songs. Asha married Ganpatrao Bhosle at 16, a union that ended in separation after years of hardship. Later, she found love with composer Rahul Dev Burman, son of the legendary Sachin Dev Burman, with whom she shared a creative and romantic partnership until his death in 1994. In her later years, her granddaughter Zanai became her closest companion, carrying forward the family’s musical legacy.
Even in her 90s, Asha remained candid about the changing music scene. In a 2023 interview, she admitted she rarely listened to contemporary songs, preferring classical and ghazals to refine her craft. Yet, she acknowledged occasional admiration for artists like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Sunishi Chauhan.
Asha Bhosle’s passing marks the end of an era, but her voice, playful, poignant, and powerful will forever echo in the heart of Bollywood.
