You may think you’ve had your fair share of decadent nights over the years, splashing the cash in London or raving it up in the sun in Ibiza.
But, if you haven’t had the chance to venture north to Manchester, then you may have been missing out on what’s been officially described as the “wildest city” in the world.
International relocation company MoveHub has conducted a study to determine how 112 of the world’s cities rank in terms of hedonism, taking into account the number of clubs in the city and the average alcohol and drug consumption of its inhabitants.
Experts combined data from Yelp, TripAdvisor and population statistics to work out how many nightlife venues there are in each city per 100,000 people.
They then utilised raw data from the Weed Index, an inventory of weed-related statistics from around the world, to figure out how much weed is consumed per 100,000 people in each city per year.
They then used statistics from the UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and the WHO (World Health Organisation) to assess how much cocaine and alcohol is consumed in each country per year, before working out the average consumption per city based on these figures.
All of this accumulated information was then summarised in scores that ranged from zero to three, with zero referring to a city that’s “completely tame” and three used to describe one that’s “absolutely bonkers.”
Manchester came out on top of the list with a score of 2.83.
This shouldn’t come as any surprise when one considers the “rave revolution” that the northern city fostered in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Manchester had the most nightlife hotspots out of any other city on the list, with 818 per 100,000 people.
On top of that, the Weed Index indicated that Mancunians consume approximately 2.30 metric tons of weed per 100,000 people every year.
The capital of the UK placed far lower down on the list, coming in 30th with a score of 2.07.
However, student-favourite Leeds placed 6th on the list with an average “wildness” score of 2.49.
When it came to the land across the pond, USA proved itself as an extremely debauched country, with six of its cities making the top ten.
