PLOT:

In a godforsaken bar in the middle of nowhere, an all-girl band—Ms. 45—rips the stage apart with their punk spirit. But their performance impresses an enthusiastic fan who lures the girls into a trap, sedates them, and starts…customizing them. Slowly they begin to gain consciousness and, in total shock, realize their arms have all been replaced with axes and chainsaws to fight gladiator-style in a junkyard arena owned by a sadistic “emperor,” forcing them into the battle of their lives with one prize in mind—their freedom.

MOVIE REVIEW:

Spare Parts is an interesting concept that’s entertaining enough but it never rises to greatness. The whys of the situation aren’t explained in a satisfactory enough way and after a while you do tire of the constant repetitive fight scenes. The film’s tendency to be gratuitous with the gore hampers it too as some of the special effects pull you out of the realism the film is aiming for.”

Girl power, sure, but maybe not the most thorough or well-rounded type of feminism. I’m not sure what the end game was, besides allowing Julian Richings to be fantastic and a little bit of extra B-movie gore, and really, in a lot of ways, that’s enough for me. Is Spare Parts groundbreaking? Not remotely. But it sure is fun.”

The production values are slick, the set design intriguing, and Andrew Thomas Hunt helms the proceedings nicely. The screenplay from David Murdoch and Svet Rouskov has a few issues, though, including stock characters and reliance on some well-worn genre tropes. Also, the film never settles on a camp, absurdist, or played-straight vibe.”

The biggest fault I have with Spare Parts is the lack of a backstory for all of this […] But there’s enough action to keep you from thinking too much about it. And even if you can guess who’ll make it into the final round, the blood-soaked climax is worth waiting around for […] Spare Parts is the body horror mashup of Spartacus and Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome that you didn’t know you needed to see.”
